Our Story
The Albanian Visual Arts Network (AVAN) was formed in the spring of 2024, as the necessity to self-organize and represent the dynamic local art scene towards a regional and international audience increasingly became a priority. The Network was born with the purpose of becoming the leading platform for providing Albanian independent art institutions and local self-managed galleries, a united voice towards audiences and policy-makers, while nurturing a constellation of spaces which will allow the practices of emerging and established artists to flourish.

Our Principles
Who we are
╱ The Albanian Visual Arts Network is a network of independent organizations that operate in the field of contemporary visual arts in Albania.
╱ AVAN understands itself as a union of entities with diverse approaches but that share the same interest of operating and addressing their urgencies with the language of visual arts.
╱ AVAN was founded during the Vlora Art Meeting 2024 by key stakeholders of the visual arts scene of Albanian on 25 of May 2024.
What we do
╱ The main aim of AVAN is to strengthen the contemporary art scene in Albania by gathering the scene to create an inspirational, collective framework which fosters collaboration and unity in future endeavours.
╱ AVAN advocates for sustainable funding and better working conditions for contemporary visual arts organizations.
Our values
╱ AVAN works to ensure transparency within the network and in relations with institutions, to encourage artistic research, critical thinking and freedom of expression.
╱ AVAN is open to all formal and informal contemporary art organizations operating in Albania.
╱ The network works in solidarity with visual artists in Albania.
Membership
╱ New members can be accepted into the network by expressing their interest directly, and their acceptance will be voted on at the General Assembly of all members, taking place either at Tirana Art Weekend, or Vlora Art Meeting, on a twice a year schedule.

28 November
28 November is a Tirana-based bookshop founded in 2017 that purveys texts (new, used, bootlegged) that relate to independence, anarchy, spaces of exception, desire, withdrawal, noncompliance, self-management, forms of identification, love. In addition to hosting the weekly feminist reading group Radical Sense, since 2018, 28 November, with Bulevard Art and Media Institute, organizes An Independent Book Fair in Tirana.

Art House
Art House foundation is a cultural initiative located in Shkodër, Albania, founded by Adrian and Melisa Paci in 2015. Since its inception, the foundation aims to transform the private space of the home into a welcoming space for exchange and discussion on the development of contemporary art, open for the community.
It was designed as a space of dialogue between the intimate and the public, the local and the international, the tradition and the contemporary. Art House aims to promote a dialogue between the local artists and leading figures on the national art scene and to create an exchange platform between artists of different generations.
In addition, Art House aims to present to the public with new trends of contemporary developments in art through conversations, exhibitions, workshops and publications.
The main activities of Art House are the festival ‘Ekrani i Artit’, a festival dedicated to experimental film, video art and documentary on art; Art House School, a program of residency, exchange and interaction between young artists; and the publications of the ‘bulëzat’ series, with contributions on theoretical thoughts.

Qysh në konceptimin e tij fillestar ai synon transformimin e hapësirës private të shtëpisë në një territor mikpritës shkëmbimesh e diskutimesh mbi zhvillimet bashkëkohore të artit duke e hapur atë për komunitetin.

Gjithashtu Art House synon t’i paraqesë publikut prurjet e zhvillimeve bashkëkohore të artit nëpërmjet organizimit të bisedave, ekspozitave, punëtorive apo botimeve.
Aktiviteter kryesore te Fondacionit Art House janë festivali Ekrani i Artit, një festival që i dedikohet filmit eksperimental, video artit dhe dokumentarit mbi artin; Art House School, një program rezidence, shkëmbimi dhe nderveprimi mes artistëve të rinj dhe botimet e serisë “bulëzat” me kontribute të mendimit teorik.

Art Kontakt
Art Kontakt emerged from the growing demand for establishing a dynamic and contemporary cultural scene in Albania since 2007 by the culture manager and art producer Andi Tepelena. Art Kontakt foresees to be a primary actor of this scene through the promotion and implementation of cultural exchanges and artistic initiatives in various fields, such as: contemporary art, cultural heritage, and cultural tourism. Art Kontakt also assists interested bodies in improving and furthering the field of art management in Albania. Art Kontakt aims to promote contemporary art in its multidisciplinary forms and techniques, establish partnerships with international cultural organizations in the Balkans and Mediterranean regions, and promote Albanian cultural heritage by exchanging knowledge and utilizing international best practices.

Bazament Art Space
Bazament is an art space dedicated to contemporary art in Tirana, Albania founded il 2016. Its main focus is to create an independent and sustainable contemporary art scene, by offering a new exhibition space where narratives and the discourse of Albanian contemporary art, can be shown and discussed, in close relationship to the international contemporary art scene.
Bazament functions as a project space focusing on production of exhibitions projects and also on the discourse of Contemporary art by organizing talks, screenings, publications in collaboration with both local and international artists, curators and different independent and institutional actors of the field.

Botime Berk
Berk is an independent publishing house based in Tirana, Albania, founded in 2020 by Anna Shkreli. It is dedicated to promoting culture and literature both locally and internationally. Berk’s mission is to support and distribute works by Albanian authors and to bring the best of world literature to Albanian readers. At Berk you can also find a coworking space that aims to drive change in publishing by preserving cultural vitality.
Berk publishes a wide range of genres, including novels, non-fiction literature, poetry, children’s books, and academic texts, striving to cater to diverse literary and cultural interests. The publishing company actively participates in cultural life by organizing and attending book fairs, presentations, and conferences, promoting reading and connecting authors with the public. Berk collaborates with cultural institutions, NGOs, and universities to develop special projects and educational initiatives.

Bulevard Art and Media Institute
Conceived as an open editorial process, Bulevard’s program is composed of diaries, gossip and letters, with a focus on archival narratives. These manifest as publications, performative happenings, and annual gatherings with artists, curators, archivists, independent publishers and editos. Bulevard centers education, social justice, intergenerational feminist and queer practices, and the continuous search for spaces in which communities can meet and express themselves freely.
Bulevard opened in Tirana in 2021. It is located in the basement of Destil Creative Hub, in the former headquarters of Gazeta Bashkimi, a leading newspaper during the socialist regime. Bulevard was co-founded by Sonila Abdalli and Valentina Bonizzi, who share a vision of a shared space.

Konceptuar si një proces redaktimi, programi i Bulevardit përbëhet nga Ditaret, Thashethemet dhe Letrat, me fokus mbi narrativat arkivuese. Këto formate manifestohen në publikime, ngjarje performuese, dhe mbledhje vjetore me artistë, arkivistë, botuesit e pavarur, dhe kuratorë. Bulevardi vë fokusin në edukim, drejtësinë shoqërore, praktikat ndërbrezore feministe dhe queer, si dhe kërkimin e vazhueshëm për hapësira, në të cilat komunitetet të mund të takohen e të shprehen lirisht.
Bulevard Art and Media Institute u hap në Tiranë në vitin 2021. Ndodhet në bodrumin e “Destil Creative Hub”, tek ish zyrat e ish Gazetës Bashkimi, një prej gazetave kryesore në vend gjatë regjimit socialist. Galeria e Bregdetit
Galeria e Bregdetit (Gallery of the Coast – Center for Changing Landscapes) is a seasonal contemporary exhibition space and artistic research center which runs its program during the tourist season of the Albanian Riviera in the coastal south of the country. The gallery aims to use contemporary art and research-based projects to investigate the invisible links that are shaping and transforming the territory. Galeria e Bregdetit was established in 2018 in Radhima seeking to challenge the narrative of this territory as a one-dimensional tourist destination by creating a platform for artistic investigation and promotion. Galeria e Bregdetit has several long lines of research, such ARTiLERIA Sazan, which aims to use cultural planning in the rehabilitation of the abandoned island of Sazan; South by the Sea, a yearly showcase of southern voices in contemporary art; and the Off Season Artist Residency, which brings contemporary artists to the seaside when the “pressure of tourism” is turned off.

Galeria e Bregdetit – Qendra për Peisazhe në Ndryshim është një hapësirë sezonale për ekspozita bashkëkohore dhe një qendër kërkimore artistike, e cila zhvillon programin e saj kryesisht gjatë sezonit turistik në Rivierën Shqiptare. Galeria synon të përdorë artin bashkëkohor dhe projekte hulumtuese për të nxjerrë ne pah lidhjet e pa dukshme që po formësojnë dhe transformojnë territorin.
Galeria e Bregdetit u themelua në vitin 2018 në Radhimë, me qëllimin që të sfidojë narrativën e këtij territori si një destinacion turistik njëdimensional duke krijuar një platformë për kërkimin dhe promovimin artistik.
Galeria e Bregdetit ka disa linja kërkimore të përhershme, si ARTiLERIA Sazan, e cila synon të përdorë planifikimin kulturor në rehabilitimin e ishullit të braktisur të Sazanit; South by the Sea, një ekspozitë periodilke e zërave jugorë në artin bashkëkohor; dhe Off Season Artist Residency, e cila sjell artistë bashkëkohorë në bregdet kur “presioni i turizmit” është i më i ulët.

Minus Art Space
Minus is a new artist-run/independent space in Tirana dedicated to the discovery and support of young Albanian contemporary artists. Founded in 2022 by Matilda Odobashi, a contemporary artist who has made an important contribution to the Albanian contemporary art scene. Minus is conceived as a place for experimentation, exhibitions, workshops, and exchanges between the community of young artists and art lovers.

Pararoja
Pararoja is an independent publishing house founded in 2020 by Olson Lamaj in response to the need to promote visual artists’ stories in the form of fanzines. Each issue of the magazine is dedicated to a contemporary artist who shares their investigation of a particular visual history that they have been researching. The zines that Pararoja produces are made in a limited quantity and printed with photocopies. The project aims to explore the alternative editorial possibilities offered by the artist’s book, fanzines, posters, and other self-produced art materials.

Parking Art Gallery
Parking Art Gallery, known simply as Parking, is an artistic space based in Tirana since 2023 that serves artists of national minorities, not only by offering them the opportunity to exhibit their works but at the same time to generate discussions that aim to open and promote intercultural dialogue.
The purpose of Parking is to fill a gap related to the art and cultural scene of national minorities in the Republic of Albania, offering an alternative space for all artists belonging to national minorities, and not only.

Prag Space
Prag is a new exhibition space based in Tirana, which aims at exchanging ideas, sharing experiences and creating a dialogue within the context of contemporary art. It was founded in 2024 by three young albanian curators: Klaudia Fagu, Resina Meçani and Fabio Toska that were participants of the first edition of “Curating with Care” alternative educational program organized by Tirana Art Lab. As the name itself suggests, Prag aspires to be a valuable opportunity for the emerging artists to be in the “eve” of their development, and by all means, crossing the “threshold” towards new artistic journeys. Situated inside Oborri Tirana, just as in the ancient Greece, where philosophers, artists and citizens gathered at the agora to share their ideas and conceptions, the space becomes the ideal agora towards building a multidisciplinary dialogue between the contemporary, feelings, nature and traditional spaces that are restored to the art.

Prag është një hapësirë e re ekspozimi në Tiranë, që ka si qëllim shkëmbimin e ideve, ndarjen e përjetimeve dhe dialogun nën shenjën e artit bashkëkohor. U themeluar në vitin 2024 nga tre kurator te rij: Klaudia Fagu, Resina Meçani dhe Fabio Toska që u takuan gjatë edicionit tër parë të programit edukativ “Kurim me Pëkujdesje” organizuar nga Tirana Art Lab. Nga vetë emri, Prag synon të jetë një mundësi më shumë për artistët e rinj për të qenë në “prag” të zhvillimit të tyre, e pse jo, kalimin e “pragut” drejt rrugëtimeve të reja artistike. E vendosur brenda mjediseve të Oborri Tirana, ashtu si në Greqinë e lashtë, ku filozofët, artistët dhe qytetarët mblidheshin në agora për të ndarë idetë dhe botëkuptimet e tyre, hapësira shndërrohet në agoran ideale në drejtim të ndërtimit të një dialogu multidisiplinar midis bashkëkohores, ndjesive, natyrës dhe hapësirave tradicionale që i rikthehen artit.
Satellite Zone
Satellite Zone is a nomadic platform based in Tirana and founded in 2023, whose aim is to promote the creative potential of young artists. It offers an opportunity for artists to explore, experiment, and exhibit their work. Satellite Zone aspires to be part of this artistic communication system through different mediums. Knowing the challenges that young artists often face, Satellite Zone encourages young and emerging artists to be part of this experience. Satellite Zone is co-founded by Kristanja Çene, Inda Sela, Resina Meçani.

The Albanian Cinematheque
The Albanian Cinematheque established in 2016 by the cineaste Iris Elezi is dedicated to film education through the creation, research and publication, as well as the organisation of educational activities such as screenings, workshops and retrospectives of Albanian and international film titles.

Tirana Art Lab - Center for Contemporary Art
Tirana Art Lab – Center for Contemporary Art is an independent institution, founded in 2010 by Adela Demetja. TAL aims at promoting emerging artists and contemporary art from Albania, Central Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. Through different events like residencies, exhibitions, workshops, performances, lectures, and talks, as well as publications, TAL has managed to create a space for emergent critical and reflective thought. The center initiates and supports new productions by national and international artists, and projects critically engaged with artistic, cultural, and social issues of transitional and contemporary societies.
Throughout the years, TAL has grown into a contemporary art center, engaged in a wide range of activities and collaborations with other art institutions, museums, and academic structures in Albania, the South Eastern Europe Region and the international landscape.
Since 2018 TAL has been putting an emphasis on projects rooted in research and archiving, in relation to art in public space and highlighting the practices of women artists. In 2023 TAL initiated “Curating with Care” the first alternative educational program in curating in Albania.

E themeluar si një organizatë jofitimprurëse, me iniciativën e Adela Demetjës në vitin 2010, TAL synon të promovojë artistët emergjent dhe artin bashkëkohor nga Shqipëria si dhe nga Evropa Qendrore, Lindore dhe Juglindore. Qendra është e orientuar drejt procesit dhe hulumtimit. Nëpërmjet formateve të ndryshme si, rezidencat, ekspozitat, punëtoritë, shfaqjet, ligjëratat dhe bisedimet, si dhe publikimet, TAL ka arritur të krijojë një hapësirë për zhvillimin e debateve dhe mendimeve emergjente kritike dhe refleksive. Qendra ndërmerr dhe mbështet prodhime të reja nga artistë vendas dhe ndërkombëtarë dhe projekte të angazhuara në mënyrë kritike me çështjet artistike, kulturore dhe shoqërore të shoqërive bashkëkohore në tranzicion.
Gjatë gjithë këtyre viteve, TAL është rritur në një qendër të artit bashkëkohor të angazhuar me një gamë të gjerë aktivitetesh dhe bashkëpunimesh me institucionet e tjera të artit, muzetë dhe strukturat akademike në Shqipëri, Rajonin e Evropës Juglindore dhe peizazhin ndërkombëtar.
Që nga viti 2018, Tirana Art Lab ka vendosur theksin në projekte të bazuara në kërkim dhe dhe arkivim, lidhur me artin në hapësirën publike dhe në theksimin e praktikave të artisteve gra.. Në vitin 2023, TAL nisi “Kurim me Përkujdesje”, programi i parë edukativ për kurimin në Shqipëri.

ZETA Center for Contemporary Art
ZETA Center for Contemporary Art is a non-profit exhibition space founded in 2007 by Valentina Koça. With its 150 square-meter area on the second floor of a mixed residential and commercial building at Abdyl Frashëri Street in downtown Tirana, ZETA functions as an autonomous cultural venue for multidisciplinary approaches to visual arts, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, sound, and performance. Over the years ZETA has contributed significantly to the vitality and dynamics of the contemporary art scene, supporting the development of new artistic practices by providing institutional support for the up-and-coming generation of artists from Albania and overseas.
Besides exhibitions, ZETA also hosts educational programs, workshops and discursive events reflecting on the pressing socio-cultural issues of our times in relation to visual arts. While acting as a nexus of collaborative practices between artists and curators, critics, researchers and other art professionals, ZETA has developed partnerships with local, regional and international institutions. As of 2018, the Ardhje Award for contemporary visual artists from Albania up to 35 years of age, is organized and managed by ZETA.

ZETA Center for Contemporary Art është një hapësirë ekspozite non-profit, e themeluar në vitin 2007 nga Valentina Koça. Me hapësirën e saj prej 150 metra katrorë në katin e dytë të një ndërtese të përzier rezidenciale dhe komerciale në rrugën Abdyl Frashëri, në qendër të Tiranës, ZETA funksionon si një qendër e pavarur kulturore për qasje multidisiplinare në artet pamore, duke përfshirë pikturën, skulpturën, fotografinë, videon, instalacionin, zërin dhe performancën. Gjatë viteve, ZETA ka kontribuar ndjeshëm në gjallërinë dhe dinamikën e skenës së artit bashkëkohor, duke mbështetur zhvillimin e praktikave të reja artistike dhe ofruar mbështetje institucionale për brezin e ri të artistëve nga Shqipëria dhe jashtë shtetit.
Përveç ekspozitave, ZETA gjithashtu organizon programe edukative, workshope dhe aktivitete diskursive që reflektojnë mbi çështjet socio-kulturore të kohës tonë në lidhje me artin pamore. Duke vepruar si një nyjë e praktikave bashkëpunuese midis artistëve dhe kuratorëve, kritikëve, hulumtuesve dhe profesionistëve të tjerë të artit, ZETA ka zhvilluar partneritete me institucione lokale, rajonale dhe ndërkombëtare. Që nga viti 2018, Çmimi Ardhje për artistët bashkëkohorë vizualë nga Shqipëria deri në moshën 35 vjeçare, është organizuar dhe menaxhuar nga ZETA.
